I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself to all of you who read My Man Mitt. You may have read my earlier blog, entitled “Dignity”.
My name is Aaron Gulbransen. I am an Evangelical Christian and lifelong resident of one of the bluest states in the nation, New York. I have worked in and around politics for several years, having worked for the Sean Hannity Radio Show, Bloomberg Mayoral Re-election campaign, Fossella Congressional Re-election campaign, Students for Life of America, and for the 2000 Lazio Senate Campaign.
I am an aspiring lawyer and hope to one day practice before the US Supreme Court. I am also currently working on a book tentatively titled, “Are You Kidding Me?” It is primarily about the ridiculousness that occurs in politics public life.
As I am blogging on My Man Mitt, I am obviously a very strong supporter of Governor Romney and his campaign for the Presidency. I am a strong supporter for many reasons; however, these are three of the most important:
1- I believe that this is quite possibly the most important election in recent memory, for a variety of reasons. In my humble opinion, the possibility that the next president may appoint 1-3 new justices to the Supreme Court in addition to the many lower appointees is most important of them all. For starters, a single new strict constructionist justice in the US Supreme Court gives us the chance to overturn Roe v. Wade and the Engel v. Vitale. For those that don’t know, Engel v. Vitale was the decision that for all intents and purposes, banned school prayer. Secondly, a 5-4 strict constructionist justices vs. liberal activist justices majority creates the opportunity to rein in the liberal activist lower courts, such as the state supreme courts of Massachusetts or Florida. Thirdly, say you are care nothing about social issues such as gay marriage or abortion, these courts still affect you. Did you know that the State Supreme Court of Missouri once ordered their state legislature to raise taxes? That is clearly unconstitutional. Yet, their ruling was upheld by several federal judges and eventually by the US Supreme Court. In short, we need strict constructionist judges to right the wrongs done by liberal activist judges. Where does Governor Romney figure into all of this? Honestly, he is the only one I trust to follow through on his word in relation to this issue. As Governor of Massachusetts, he led the fight against the blatantly unconstitutional ruling by the Mass. State Supreme Court ordering the state legislature to institute same-sex marriage. He also smartly forestalled its institution by enforcing a little known law that basically dictates that marriages not recognized in other states will not be recognized in Massachusetts, even if performed there. His exemplary actions in this situation were enough to win the support of Jay Sekulow, head of the ACLJ and ECLJ, one of America’s foremost successful and respected conservative public interest attorneys.
Here is an interview that Jay did with Justin Hart at the CPAC:
I do not trust the other candidates on this issue because they have not proven themselves. In fact, McCain and Giuliani have disproved themselves. We all remember McCain’s role in the infamous “Gang of 14” Senate confirmation deal. Giuliani appointed liberal activist judges by a percentage of 8 – 1 during his tenure as Mayor of New York City.
2- I believe the President of the United States should have significant executive experience, ideally as a Governor of a populous state. For me, this criterion quickly eliminates senators and congressmen from consideration. There is a different mentality and management style possessed by legislators versus the mentality possessed by executives. Legislators are responsible for ideas and legislation, but they never are charged with implementing it. Executives understand the totality of the situation, as they have to allocate resources, work with legislators, and work with the bureaucracy.
Governor Romney happens to be an executive of the highest caliber. Referring to him as a business legend is no mere marketing ploy. It is true. My friends in the financial industry consider him a genius that truly understands the business world. His success at Bain Capital and Bain & Company is truly special. Liberals and Conservatives in the business world respect him. Jim Cramer of CNBC, whom I consider pretty liberal, considers Romney “the best businessman in North America”.
What Governor Romney did with the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games is also truly amazing. Calling it a turnaround is an understatement. Before he took the helm as CEO, the Games were scandal plagued, lacking sponsors, and running a deficit. He cleaned up the corruption, brought in sponsors that traditionally did not participate in the Olympic Games, and turned the deficit into a profit. Let me emphasize the point that the Olympics generally do NOT run a profit. The 2002 Games did, and they did without having to accept taxpayer funds from Utah as well.
As Governor of Massachusetts, he was extremely successful, especially given the fact that the state legislature was controlled 85% - 15% by the opposition party. There was a tremendous budget deficit before he took office, but Gov. Romney left office with a surplus without raising taxes. In fact, one of my favorite stories about his term is this: The state legislature instituted a tax increase of 100 million dollars, proceeded to override his veto, and thought they won the political battle. Governor Romney then proceeded to have a pro-forma tax bill sent to all the citizens of Massachusetts with a note explaining that if they were unhappy with the bill, then to call or write their respective legislator. The citizens were so outraged and the state legislature was so bombarded with calls, emails, and letters, that they reversed the bill and actually passed a 100 million dollar tax DECREASE.
Governor Romney has been successful in every type of organization, be it for-profit, non-profit, or governmental. He has shown himself to be conservative and adept at dealing with allies and the opposition alike. Clearly, his experience is unique of all the candidates.
3- Governor Romney is a dignified and moral man. He does not carry the baggage that the other candidates carry, for he is truly a decent man that sticks to his convictions. Besides being clearly capable in public life, he has clearly been a wonderful family man. His children are all successful in the paths they chose in life, and who doesn’t think that Ann Romney will make a superb first lady? The point is simple. As President, Mitt Romney will be someone we can be proud of. His family will also be a "first family", the kind that exemplifies the best in our nation.
As was my message in my earlier blog, don’t we want the President of the United States to be someone that upholds the dignity of the office AND demonstrates a superior level of competence? Don't we want our President to have demonstrated excellence in every facet of his life, or have we as a society degraded to the point where we will accept less than excellence? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to settle.

I love this site, and loved that post. Eloquent and well thought out. I am wondering though- Dobson and his friends said that they would run a 3rd party candidate only if Guliani was elected, right? Or was it if anyone that is in the top tier was? Thank you in advance for your clarification!
