The Candidate Who Can See the Enemy, Can Defeat It.  Dr. Phares makes a compelling case for Mitt Romney:

Probably I am among the few who see the clouds gathering around theglobe and thus have been urging leaders to act fast, decisively andearly on to avoid the future Jihad –that has began already. Had what Isee wasn’t there I would be fully excited -- like any citizen -- toargue forcefully about the crucial matters of our existence: health, environment, nutrition, scientific discoveries, animal protection, andwhy not space exploration. Had I not realized that all that debate washinging on what Bin laden and Ahmedinijad were preparing, I would havebeen looking at a whole different roaster of Presidential candidates. But that is not the world I see ahead of us, in the immediate future.

Hence,I’ll leave the debate about the best economic and technologicaldirections to their experts and I would postpone the social andphilosophical dreams to better times. Right now and right here I aminterested in who among the candidates can simply understand the tragicequation we’re in and may be able to use the resources of this nationto cross the bridge ahead of us. President Bush was elected before 9/11neither on the grounds of avoiding the Jihadi wars nor winning them.Very few even knew that we were already at war. He was reelected on theground of being a better choice than the defeatist politicalalternative. This year I suggest that Americans deserve a more daringchoice. They need to see and certify that the next occupant of theWhite House lives on this Planet, at this age, knows that we are at warand above all knows which war we are fighting. The margin of error istoo slim to allow hesitations.

By 2012 the Jihadists may recruit one million suicide bombers and couldalign two nuclear powers. By 2016 they would deploy 10 million suicidebombers and seize five regimes equipped with the final weapon. In thenext eight years NATO’s European membership could be battling urbanintifadas and US task forces lacking shelters worldwide. To avoid theseprospects of apocalypse the offices on Pennsylvania Avenue must catchup with the lost opportunities as of next winter.

Thus, andunlike traditional commentators in classical US politics I am notlooking at who said what and who flipped flopped when. Frankly, itdoesn’t matter at this stage if it is a he or a she, of this or otherrace, of this or other church, and if the President is single, has alarge family or has divorced twice. The stakes are much higher than thesweet but irrelevant American usual personality debate. I want to knowif the candidates are strong willed, smart, educated about the world, informed about the threat, can define it, can identify it, can fightit, are not duped by their bureaucracy, cannot be influenced by foreignregimes, have the right advisors, can run an economy while commanding awar and still see the threats as they handle daily crisis and takedrastic measures as the hard times are approaching. I want to know ifthe candidates are very specific when they inform their public aboutthe menace. Yes, it is indeed a vital function of national securitythat we need to insure for the next few years, so that all other issuescan be addressed thoroughly. In short I don’t want to see the fall ofConstantinople being repeated on these shores in the next decade ortwo. Humanity will not recover from such a disaster.

Dr. Phares discusses the qualifications of the four remaining contenders for President, two Democrats, two Republicans.  "I am looking at the scariest item on any Presidential agenda and check out if they are conscious about it: national security."  Here is his conclusion:

This is why I have come to the conclusion that -based on what wasprovided to the public by the four leading candidates- Governor Romneyhas the capacity of managing the counter strategies against theJihadists, only because he stated to the public that he sees the enemyas to who they are. And if a President can see them, he can defeatthem. His Republican contender, now leading the polls, can sense thembut haven’t shown them. The leading candidates on the other side aremaking progress in the opposite direction: One wants to end the Warunilaterally and the other wants to make Peace with the oppressors. Inshort, if elected, Romney will try to destroy the mother ship, McCainwill supply the trenches, Clinton will pull the troops back to thebarracks and Obama will visit the foes’ bunkers.

Hence, asis, I have recommended Governor Romney for the Republican Primaries asfirst among equals while considering Senator McCain as a genuineleader. If Romney is selected I believe America may have a chance totry new strategies. If his contender is selected, we will have four oreight more years of the past seven years. On the other side, I havesuggested to counter-Terrorism experts to help Democratic candidatesrestructure their agendas on national security in line with the realityof the enemy: For I would like to see both Parties presenting a unitedvision of the threat while differing on how to confront it. That wouldbe the ideal situation America can be in and a response to the deepestwill of the American public.

I would add that considering John McCain's position on illegal immigration he is not serious about national security.  He gets A+ on the war in Iraq but national security goes way beyond that.  He has a blind spot when it comes to our borders.

McCain has also said he would close Guantanamo Bay on his first day in office.  His reasoning for closing Gitmo is reason enough to derail his "Straight Talk" Express: because "there's a lot of anti-Americanism" around the world.  According to John McCain we should bring a bunch of terrorists to the United States (Ft. Leavenworth to be exact.  Are Kansas voters listening?) so everybody will like us again.  Call it the Mealy-Mouth Express:

John Weaver, Sen McCain's chief strategist, confirmed his plans for amarkedly more conciliatory foreign policy. "The next president willhave to work extra hard to unite our friends and divide our foes. Sadlythe opposite has occurred in recent years," he said, as Sen McCainaddressed a crowded hall in the farming community of Cedar Falls.

"John believes that you can accomplish a lot more in this world bysticking to your principles, while adopting a much more humble tonewith your partners."

Humble with your partners?  I guess John McCain doesn't consider U.S. citizens his partners

The endorsement by Dr. Phares is significant:

Inshort, if elected, Romney will try to destroy the mother ship, McCainwill supply the trenches, Clinton will pull the troops back to thebarracks and Obama will visit the foes’ bunkers.

Yes, John McCain is a war hero.  That does not automatically make him the best choice for President and Commander-in-Chief of the United States.

For Professor Walid Phares to endorse Governor Mitt Romney it means that this is a statement of historical proportion. Dr Phares considers these elections as crucial for the next decade, as the Jihadi offensives are growing. he is telling us that we need a President who can go on the attack against the thrreat while running the economy. Thank you Dr Phares. Your words are full of wisdom. I am a mom and I am voting for Romney to save my future child from the threat..

Fresh off his excellent showing at the debate Wednesday night, Mitt Romney announces the endorsement of American Conservative Union President David Keene. WP Blog has the details:
Keene said he became "convinced that Mitt Romney represents our best hope for 2008" and added that in the weeks remaining before the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3, 2008 he would work to persuade "my fellow conservatives that if we are serious about electing a conservative president in 2008, it's time to unite behind his candidacy."

Long courted by Romney, Keene agreed to formalize his endorsement of the former governor during a face to face meeting in Florida on Tuesday, according to knowledgeable sources. Of Keene, Romney said he was "proud" to have the endorsement for his "campaign for conservative change."

Keene is a longtime member of the conservative movement, having spent the last quarter-century at the American Conservative Union. Prior to that post, Keene held a number of political positions including Southern regional political director for Ronald Reagan in 1976, national political director for George H. W. Bush in 1980 and senior adviser to Bob Dole in 1988 and 1996.

I had a thought this morning. People keep saying Fred Thompson is a
wonderful candidate. And I will admit, I'm willing to consider the
man if our man Mitt doesn't win. However, for months we were subjected to a steady drumbeat of hype about Fred and how he was the next Reagan
and how strong a candidate he would be. Now, despite decent numbers
nationally, he's trailing far behind in NH and the rest of the early
primary states. Apparently, his supporters see greatness in Fred but early voters have yet to see it.

With that in mind, I would like to suggest a new mascot for the Thompson campaign:

Michigan J. Frog.

Here's the link to the original 1955 Merrie Melodies cartoon "One Froggy Evening": (Am I nuts, or is the frog not just the spitting image of Fred in more ways than one?)

It could work and hey, with the WB Network gone, he's available. Just a thought.

In previous months we used to spend hours at MyManMitt calculating all of the endorsements that a candidate picks up. Thank goodness we can give this job up to someone else now!

Chris Cillizza reports on the new feature at WashingtonPost.com logging the endorsements of State Legislators.

Here are the grunt numbers for the GOP side of things in the early primaries (they gave us the numbers - we built the chart)

Here are the numbers:

Endorsements are local events and as we get closer to the election we will probably see a lot of these names chiming in for another plug for their candidate. Who knows -- the serious SC edge for McCain might make him a contender again :)

Cillizza has this to say about endorsements:
Support from elected officials in Iowa, New Hampshire etc. is crucial -- not only does each member bring a political power base of his or her own, but they also serve as important validators for their preferred candidate within a community they know (and knows them) best.

Today, Governor Mitt Romney announced that Texas Congresswoman Kay Granger has endorsed his candidacy for President of the United States. Congresswoman Granger will serve as National Co-Chair of the Women for Mitt coalition and will be a campaign surrogate to help communicate Governor Romney's message of conservative change in Washington.

"I am proud to have the endorsement of Congresswoman Granger," Governor Romney said today. "She has extensive leadership experience and a comprehensive understanding of the new generation of challenges confronting our nation. She will be a powerful surrogate for our message of making our country stronger by bolstering our national defense, controlling government spending and strengthening the American economy. I look forward to her counsel and guidance as the campaign moves forward."

Joining Romney for President, Congresswoman Granger said, "Governor Romney is a proven leader and natural problem solver. He has demonstrated the ability to turn problems into successes. As Americans, we need his leadership in Washington. He is the only candidate to demonstrate that he has a strategy to make America stronger by returning to our core conservative principles that have made this country so great. I am proud to join his campaign."

Background On Congresswoman Kay Granger:

Kay Granger Is The Former Mayor Of Fort Worth, Texas And Is Currently The Highest Ranking Republican Woman In The House Of Representatives. In November 2006, she was elected to the Republican House leadership for the 110th Congress, serving as vice chair of the Republican Conference. She is co-chair of the Iraqi Women's Caucus. Granger sits on the Appropriations Committee and serves on the Energy and Water Development, Homeland Security and Military Construction/Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittees. Granger co-chairs the Anti-Terrorism Caucus and serves as a deputy whip. Today, she is considered one of the House of Representatives' leading defense experts.

Actually, if you are using the tally off of http://thehill.com/endorsements-2008.html you will see that the US Congress endorsments "say" that Mitt has 27 but if you count them up he really has 28. I have emailed that website to indicate the problem, but they haven't changed it.

This website shows Mitt's US Congress endorsments at 28 but some of the other candadate's numbers are not up to date: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_endorsements_for_the_2008_presidential_election#_note-hill

Here's the real question...once McCain drops out, how do his endorsers break?

2008 election endorsements, election endorsements, john mccain, rudy giuliani, mitt romney, mitt romney for president
Chart as of 2/23

We admit up front that this list is not official. We've gathered the names from public news articles and on the candidates website. With that in mind there is no mistake that Mitt Romney increased his endorsement edge.

The difference seems to be a good majority of the Utah delegation getting behind him and making their names public. But there were also numerous endorsements from Georgia and South Carolina. Next week we will make available an endorsement application that will allow you to make contributions to this effort. We will try to source each of these as well.

This is by no means scientific but from the research I've done and the details I've gathered it appears that Romney has a serious edge in public endorsements (for what its worth). Yes its early in the campaign... but that's the point.

The tally: Romney 171; McCain 93; Rudy 16. These numbers were taken from official press releases and other public endorsements. We'll have a detailed list available on Tuesday.

Hey Justin, I think that this one posting by you is the most important thing posted anywhere this week about Romney -- Bar None! This graph and the number of endorsements by comparison says it all at this early stage. It says it all. No other polls or opinions matter. Those who know the top three candidates are voting with their feet and they are committing. FASCINATING. I have been looking for this information in one place for weeks now. YOU NAILED IT. You are spot on Justin. Thanks.

See comments I left at this URL referring to this great information!:

Justin, I would appreciate it if you would occassionally update this information. Best information on the GOP race out there in my opinion. Everything out there is basically speculation. These are facts with weight. "Just the facts" baby. Good work Justin.

Boston, MA – Governor Mitt Romney announced today that noted economist John Cogan will serve as Co-Chair of the Romney for President Exploratory Committee Economic Advisory Council. He will join Glenn Hubbard and Greg Mankiw in advising Governor Romney on economic policy development.

"I am pleased to welcome John Cogan to the Exploratory Committee. As one of our country's leading economists, John has an accomplished record of successfully developing pro-growth policies based on conservative principles," said Governor Romney. "As America faces extraordinary competition from abroad, we will work together to develop the policies needed to maintain our economic leadership. Through sound conservative values like low taxes and smaller government, we can help ensure a more prosperous America."

Background On John Cogan:

John Cogan Has Had A Distinguished Academic And Public Service Career. Cogan is the Leonard and Shirley Ely Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and since 1980, a Stanford University Public Policy professor. Focused on domestic policy, he is an expert on U.S. budget and fiscal policy, Social Security, and health care. In addition to his academic achievements, Cogan has had a long career of public service. From 1981 to 1983, he served as Assistant Secretary for Policy in the U.S. Department of Labor, and from 1983 to 1986, as an Associate Director in the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In 1988-1989, he was OMB Deputy Director.

In 2000, he served as a senior economic adviser to then-Governor George W. Bush on tax, budget and Social Security issues. Following the election, he directed the President's budget transition team, and most recently, was a member of the Commission to Strengthen Social Security.

Boston, MA – Today, Governor Mitt Romney announced that U.S. Senators Robert Bennett (R-UT) and Larry Craig (R-ID) will serve as Co-Senate Liaisons for the Romney for President Exploratory Committee. As Liaisons, they will lead Governor Romney's outreach efforts to their fellow Senators.

"It is an honor to have the support and leadership in the United States Senate of Senator Bennett and Senator Craig. Throughout their years of service, they have compiled strong conservative records and have accomplished much for the people of their states and their nation," said Governor Romney. "Both men have a unique perspective of the new generation of challenges confronting our nation. I look forward to working with them to find the solutions needed to ensure that our country remains a strong world leader."

Background On Governor Romney's Co-Senate Liaisons:

Senator Bob Bennet, Mitt Romney for PresidentSenator Bob Bennett Is Serving His Third Term In The United States Senate. A senior member of the Senate Banking Committee and Joint Economic Committee, he is at the center of national economic policy discussions. Here you have two guys who are all about getting it done and not about lining us appearances on the Sunday talk shows. This reflects well on the Romney campaign.

I think that Mitt Romney was smart to give Senator Jim DeMint a key role in his campaign. Senator Craig is also a good fit, but I don't know if he wants to put Senator Bennett in a such a high-profile role right now. The fact that Bennett shares Romney's LDS faith may make it seem to some that Bennett is too naturally sympathetic to the Romney Campaign or breaking "the Mormon Presidential barrier" and might cause some questions. It would be better for Romney to try and recruit the support of Republicans from as many backgrounds as possible, especially Conservative Republicans, and have Bennett and possibly Senators Mike Crapo and Orrin Hatch play back-seat roles if they are going to support their coreligionist. With all of the work that Romney and the LDS Church have had to do to placate fears that his run is supported by the hierarchy of the Mormon Church, giving one of his Mormon comrades in the Senate a key role so early might do the exact opposite.

I guess on the bright side for Romney, he can point to the fact that two Mormons in Congress, Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon and Congressman Jeff Flake of Arizona, have endorsed John McCain's candidacy (if there is ever a bright side to emphasizing support for one’s opponent). That, plus I'm pretty dang sure that Harry Reid will not endorse Romney, so it shows that Mormons tend to think more independently than they are given credit.

Romney does not need to run away from being a Mormon. To the contrary, he can use the fact that he is a “devout” follower of the Church of Jesus Christ to his advantage. It gives his candidacy uniqueness and a natural voting and fundraising base. But he needs to do everything possible to stay away from looking like he is supported by the religious institution itself.

There might even be some areas where he can offer constructive criticisms, when appropriate, of the Mormon Church. This would all depend on timing, but one such example of this might be asking why it was the Mormon Church's responsibility to get involved in Salt Lake City zoning codes that disallowed private businesses like Nordstrom's from moving away from a shopping mall that was owned by the Church. Romney could show his Reaganesque bon-e-fides by saying that he believes that such restrictions on good businesses are un-American and contrary to the freedoms that we all hold dear. The rights of businesses should not be restricted in such ways. This would probably open up a whole new can of worms when it comes to fighting unfair zoning restrictions on businesses throughout the United States. But it’s just an idea on how Romney could show that he’s his own man without contradicting Church doctrine.

My guess is that the more Romney’s campaign looks legitimate, the more he is going to have to answer questions like this anyway, so he can already have his responses ready for such questions, because they will come. It might be good for Romney to gather together a list of issues where he can put just enough distance between himself and any controversial, yet non-religiously-based, political positions held by the Mormon Church. Of course, this would have to be done with tact and it might seem difficult and a sensitive matter for Romney and the Church itself if he is forced to criticize it. But there are ways of criticizing institutions and people without completely discrediting them.

Very well put, Dave. I agree 100%. And in fact, in the NYT article mentioned below, Romney quells fears that the Church dictates the politics of its people by mentioning Reid--that he and Reid share the same faith and yet hold very different political views. As far as religious influence goes, the best thing Romney can do now is focus on groups like Evangelicals for Mitt and try to gain more support in the South.

206iscancer:

Larry Craig is a Mormon as well, actually.

I don't have any problem with them coming on board, none at all, but I think it would have been wiser to announce them when a non-Mormon Senator signed on as well. I know he's already got DeMint, but this does look too much like a "Mormon coronation", even if it's not, because, as you pointed out, Flake and Smith have endorsed McCain.

Cliff-

That might come as quite a surprise to Senator Craig. Idaho's Junior Senator Mike Crapo is a Mormon, but from what I can tell Senator Craig still considers himself to be a Methodist (unless he recently converted to Mormonism or you have some inside knowledge that Craig is secretly a Mormon or something). That would be quite funny, because most Mormons I know are proud of their religion. I hate using Wikipedia as a source, but it's quick and definitely has Craig listed as a Methodist. Craig would have probably had Wikipedia change this by now if it weren't true. There are currently 5 Mormon US Senators, the two from Utah, Mike Crapo from Idaho, Gordon Smith of Oregon, and Harry Reid is the lone Mormon Democrat in the Senate.

Correction:

Harry Reid is the lone mormon Democrat.

Life News interviewed Bopp on his endorsement of Romney today:

Saying that former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush were converts to as well, Bopp told LifeNews.com that the pro-life community "needs to be open to those who have a sincere conversion to the pro-life cause."

"When he was Governor and scientists were attempting to persuade him to support government funding of embryonic stem cell research, they said that there was no moral issue, because they destroy the embryos after 14 days," Bopp explained. "This hit him hard, how Roe v. Wade had cheapened life, and he publicly announced that he wanted to be considered pro-life."

He said a specific life-changing experience like Romney's is "persuasive."

Bopp also indicated that Romney's subsequent actions have affirmed his newfound pro-life stance.

"He vetoed the bill on embryonic stem cell research and some other efforts to liberalize the Massachusetts abortion law," Bopp said.

Ultimately, Bopp told LifeNews.com that a frank discussion of pro-life issues persuaded him.

"I have meet with him personally, discussed these issues with him and am satisfied that his pro-life position is sincere," he concluded.
